| Objectives |
|
The
Uranium Institute is the only international, non-governmental
organisation concerned with the whole nuclear fuel cycle.
The Institute is a world wide network of those involved
in all stages of the production of nuclear generated electricity.
The Institute promotes the peaceful use of nuclear energy
as a means of supplying the world's growing energy demand
while minimising environmental risks.
|
|
|
| Membership |
|
The
Institute has some 75 members
who come from all stages of the nuclear fuel cycle. The
membership includes companies from most countries which
have substantial civil nuclear power programmes. The UI
members are responsible for nearly 90% of the world's uranium
production and for the generation of about one half of the
world's electricity from nuclear sources. |
| |
| Activities |
|
The
Institute provides a forum for its members to exchange ideas,
news and views. Its members' meetings facilitate improved
communication between companies involved in the nuclear
fuel cycle world-wide.Its various publications
provide both general overviews and detailed analysis of
the nuclear fuel cycle and its component parts. |
|
Monitoring
of the outlook for the world's nuclear
fuel markets is an important function of the Institute.
The Institute publishes a market report about every 2 years,
based on input from its members andother sources, that has
proven to be one of the best available analyses of the factors
which affect the market. |
|
The
Institute provides a link between the nuclear fuel industry
and the international organisations concerned with energy
policy and related environmental issues. |
|
The
Institute's external communications
programme is designed to enhance the understanding of the
nuclear fuel cycle by those outside the nuclear industry.
It is based on a co-ordination of efforts by the membership
and the Secretariat to bring an international perspective
nuclear-related issues. The Institute also provides a public
information service which
covers all topics connected with nuclear energy. |
|
|
| Secretariat |
|
The
Institute's Secretariat, headed by the Secretary General,
is located in London, United Kingdom. The staff of the Secretariat
is responsible for facilitating the Institute's various
activities. This includes supporting the work of the Institute's
committees and carrying out research related to the nuclear
fuel cycle. |

| Funding |
|
The
Institute is an independent, non-profit organisation. It
is funded by membership subscriptions supplemented by income
from its Annual Symposium. |
